Goat Island Baptist Church
Upper Clements, NS

Build Date: ca. 1840s, possibly as early as 1810

Location: Upper Clements, NS

Goat Island Baptist Church is located near the western end of Upper Clements, overlooking Goat Island in the Annapolis Basin. It is the oldest Baptist church building remaining in Nova Scotia, and may be the oldest extant Baptist church in Canada. The church’s construction features Gothic Revival windows, an octagonal steeple, an interior gallery, and original box pews. Israel Potter, a follower of the New Light movement popular at the time, was a founding leader of the Baptist congregation in the area, and his service to the church is memorialized on a plaque inside.
